eAuction #15, Los 2. Schätzpreis: CHF 6'500.00

Syracuse, Sicily. Under Thoinon and Sosistratos (278 BC). AV 60 Litrai - Dekadrachm (16 mm, 4.25 g), c. 278 BC (?).
Obv. Head of Persephone left, wearing wreath of grain ears, earring and pearl necklace; ΣYPAKOΣIΩN before, bee behind.
Rev. Nike, holding kentron in right hand, reins in left, driving fast biga right; ring above, Θ below; below exergual line, traces of effaced name of Hiketas.
Cf. SNG ANS 776 ff. (in the name of Hiketas and cornucopiae instead of bee); Ponterio NYINC Auction January 2012, 122 (same dies).

Extremely rare. Splendid style. Excellent surfaces and extremely fine.

A very interesting issue, combining a new obverse die with bee symbol instead of cornucopiae with an old Hiketas die with his name obliterated. It seems plausible to date this issue to early after the expulsion of the tyrant from Syracuse in 278 BC by the magistrates Thoinon and Sosistratos, who were soon to call Pyrrhos of Epirus to aid against the Carthaginians.
