eAuction #50, Los 131. Schätzpreis: CHF 150.00

Faustina II (147-175 AD). AE20 (6.13 g), Hyde, Lycaonia, 163-164.
Obv. ΦΑVСΤƐΙΝΑ СƐΒΑСΤΗ, draped bust to right.
Rev. ΥΔΗС ΙƐΡΑС ΚΟΙΝ ΛΥΚΑΟ, bearded river- or lake-god reclining left, holding reed, resting on water-urn; in water below, three fish.
RPC online 7243 (4 specimens) = von Aulock, Lykaonien, 85-89.

Extremely rare and of significant interest. Very fine.

The only knowledge we have about the city of Hyde comes from its very rare 2nd Century coinage (von Aulock knew 8 coins from Hyde in total), a brief mention by Pliny telling us that it was situated on the frontier between Galatia and Cappadocia, and a single inscription. Hyde was probably located on the Konya plateau, an area without rivers but with some lakes; the god shown on the reverse of our coin therefore is likely a lake-god. The reverse legend also tells us that the city called itself 'holy' and was part of the Lycaonian Koinon.
