A note from BCD: There is no doubt that ancient coin iconography in all its guises (no pun intended) is becoming more popular as an article subject. For anyone wondering what the reason is for this trend, the explanation is simple: today’s younger generations of numismatists are obliged to produce adequate written proof of their value as scholars. This is even more urgent and vital for the ones who hope to get a job at an institution. It is therefore more convenient and quicker at the same time to choose suitable bits of information and use them to support ‘invented’ theories or ‘discovered’ arguments rather than deal with hard numismatic data that will not “bend” to produce the desired result. Having said that though, all products of the “iconography school” in ancient numismatics should not be dismissed outright. There is original and valuable work being done out there and anyone with some numismatic common sense should be able to sort the good apples from the rotten ones. This volume includes some well laid out and readable articles but at the end of the day the reader comes out doubting that new ground has been broken, wondering if anything has been put forward that was not already lurking in the back of his mind. And yet today, perhaps this is not such an unforgivable sin as the old guard would have it in the past…
