A note from BCD: When this book came out hardly anyone collected
Sparta. Today, with Leonidas and his 300 having appeared on the big screen,
there is an increasing interest in Lakedaimonian coinage with some relatively
common coins bringing very high prices at auction. This excellent corpus
therefore may serve to draw attention to the real rarities, some (but not all)
of which this writer was fortunate enough to have acquired while building up
his collection of Peloponnesian coins that was eventually sold in Leu 96.
