eAuction #39, Lot 231. Estimate: CHF 100.00

Great Britain: Volume I. Part II: The Newnham Davis Coins in the Wilson Collection of Classical and Eastern Antiquities Marischal College Aberdeen (nos. 1-490, plates IX-XXII with tissue guards). London 1936. Folio, printed tan stiff paper covers, worn at edges. Interior Near Fine.

CS 1913, Daehn 1968

A note from BCD: In contrast to the two “display type” collections of exceptional Greek coins presented in the previous lot, here we have a selection made by Barclay Head from a much more extensive collection formed during the second half of the 19th century that also included bronzes. It is fascinating but also instructive to observe and study Head’s choices; some coins he thought worth including would certainly not feature in a similar publication today. E. S. G. Robinson’s introduction is quite revealing; if only some people would read it carefully and then search the text equally carefully, we would not have 19th century forgeries making their appearance in 21st century auction catalogues.
