Messene, Messenia. AR Obol (9-10 mm, 0.68 g), c. 370/369-330 BC. Obv. Head of Demeter to left, wearing wreath of wheat ears and pendant earring. Rev. Tripod; ME-Σ in fields. BMC 2. Grandjean 13a (this coin).
Very rare, darkly toned. Ancient edge chip (not porous), otherwise, very fine.
From the BCD collection and ex LHS 96 (2006), 702.
The early silver coinage of Messene is very rare, with only three staters, two triobols and nineteen obols known (of which fifteen are in museums).
