eAuction #47, Lot 49. Estimate: CHF 250.00
Caracalla (198-217 AD). AE Tetrassarion (29 mm, 18.23 g), Philippopolis, Thrace, c. 209-211. Obv. AΥT K M AΥΡ ANTΩNEINOC, laureate head to right. Rev. ΦIΛIΠΠOΠOΛEITΩN, Septimius Severus standing turned to left, in military dress and with his triple beard, holding globe in his right hand and long scepter in his left. Varbanov 1554.
Rare. Pleasant dark green patina. Very fine.
The reverse figure can safely by identified as Septimius Severus due to the amazingly detailed small head with the emperor's typical curly beard. Judging from Caracalla's mature portrait, the coin was likely struck towards the end of Septimius' reign.
