Spring 349

A note from BCD: Leo Mildenberg, the protégé, good friend and natural successor of Jacob Hirsch, started the Hess-Leu sales together with Hermann Rosenberg, the son of the Frankfurt dealer Sally Rosenberg. The early Hess-Leu sales were meant to be the revival of the Naville-Ars Classica auctions that were terminated because of the Nazi persecution policies against Jews in the 30’s. In these Lucerne events of the 50’s one could find old pedigreed coins, many of them from Jameson. Lot 283 in this auction, one of the writer’s “dream coins”, went to Winterthur for a total cost of CHF 176, the hammer being CHF 155. It is still unique and the museum, known also for its collection of coin casts, owes its acquisition to the astuteness and wisdom of Hansjorg Bloesch, its low profile curator but at the same time warmhearted and helpful host to all who visited the coin collection.
