eAuction #7, Lot 37. Estimate: CHF 250.00
Kings of Bactria. Menander II. (c. 90-85 BC, or around 65 BC). AE square quadruple unit (21 mm, 6.26 g). Obv. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΔIKAIOΥ MENANΔPOY, Athena standing left, raising right hand, holding spear and palm in left arm; shield before. Rev. Legend in karoshti around lion seated left. Bop. Série 5C; SNG ANS -.
Very rare. Good very fine.
It was long believed that there was just one king named Menander, but the coins bearing this name fall into two disctinctly different groups, indicating that two kings of the same name existed. Bopearachchi suggested a date of c. 90-85 BC for Menander II. whereas R. C. Senior connected his coins to those of Amyntas and Artemidoros, thus dating his reign to c. 65 BC.
