eAuction #20, Lot 77. Estimate: CHF 250.00

C. Memmius C.f. AR Denarius (19-21 mm, 3.79 g). Rome, 56 BC.
Obv. C·MEMMI·C·F, Head of Ceres right, wearing barley wreath.
Rev. C·MEMMIVS / IMPERATOR, Trophy; in the foreground, kneeling captive with hands tied behind his back.
Crawford 427/1.

Scarce. Reverse slightly off centre. Nicely toned and about extremely fine.

The reverse refers to the moneyer’s uncle, C. Memmius L.f., the commander of the victorious Roman forces in Bithynia in the early 50s BC, who received the title imperator for them in BC 57. This coin was struck shortly thereafter to commemorate that event.
