Obv. Head of Roma with winged helmet right, behind, mark of value *, below chin, mint mark.
Rev. N. FABI / PICTOR / ROMA, Fabius Pictor seated left on chair, wearing helmet and cuirass, holding apex and spear; beside, shield inscribed QVI/RIN.
Craw. 268/1b.
Scarce. Good very fine.
Q. Fabius Pictor is shown with the apex as he was flamen Dialis, priest of Jupiter. This office included a whole series of taboos. He was not allowed to ride on horseback, nor to stay away one night from Rome. He was forbidden to touch goats, ivy and raw meat. Also he never should see an army. In Rome it was not forbidden for a priest to make a political carreer. So Fabius was elected praetor, but he had to give up his command that was conferred to him after the end of his office period. Nevertheless this reverse refers to the double prestige that the two offices brought to the ancestor of the mint-master.
