eAuction #1, Lot 34. Estimate: CHF 425.00

Phlious, Phliasia. AR Hemidrachm (13-14 mm, 2.48 g), ca. 430-420 BC.
Obv. Bull butting to right.
Rev. Large Φ, lacking the central pellet as well as the protruding ends of the central crossbar; four pellets in corners, linear square around; all within incuse square.
BMC 3 var., SNG Cop. var., Traité 717 var.

Very rare. Fine / good fine.

From the BCD collection and ex LHS 96 (2006), 93.

Reverse die linked to BCD Peloponnesos 94, an AE Dichalkon overstruck on a Syracuse onkiai from c. 425 BC, allowing to date the beginning of the bronze coinage of Phlious to ca. 420-410, which is considerable earlier than hitherto assumed.
