eAuction #20, Lot 54. Estimate: CHF 900.00
Seleukid Kings. Antiochos I Soter (280-261 BC). AR Tetradrachm (25 mm, 17.03 g), Ai Khanoum (Alexandria on the Oxus?). Obv. Diademed head right. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIOXOY, Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow and resting on bow; to left, monogram ΔT in circle; to right, monogram AB. Houghton-Lorber 438.1 var. (monograms).
Rare. Excellent elderly Portrait. Good very fine.
Ai Khanoum, situated in northeastern Afghanistan, is the only Graeco-Bactrian city that has been excavated in modern times. Its ancient name is disputed, but the considerable size and location make the identification as Alexandria on the Oxus (and later Eukratidia) plausible.
